Getting restful sleep is important for brain function, muscle repair, and metabolism, among other things. ⠀
⠀
There are many reasons why you may not be getting a restful sleep, here are just some I see in clinic: ⠀
⠀
1. Anxiety / Stress - Some people find that when they’re busy doing tasks all day they don’t feel stressed but once they settle in for a good nights sleep, their mind starts running over time. ⠀
⠀
2. Blood Sugar Levels - High blood sugar levels can cause frequent urination, this can cause you to wake often to use the bathroom. Also, when your body has extra glucose in its system it can make you feel dehydrated, causing you to wake, lastly, low blood sugar can also cause you to wake feeling hungry. ⠀
⠀
3. Hormones - During perimenopause, your ovaries begin producing lower amounts of key hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. As the level of these hormones decrease, symptoms of menopause surge. One such symptom of that is insomnia. ⠀
⠀
4. Prescription medications - If you are experiencing unexplained sleep disturbances and you have just started a new medication, this could be the reason. Insomnia is a common side effect of many prescriptive medications. It’s important to know the facts before starting anything new. ⠀
There are many ways to treat sleep disturbances, depending on the root cause.
You may have tried natural supplements such as herbal teas or herbal tablets already but, if the root cause was not yet treated, you may still struggle to find balance.
If you or someone you know suffers from sleep disturbances, reach out for more info! ⠀
