This post is for all of you that wanted to know about my current gut healing protocol following my recent “Complete Microbiome Map” results. ⠀
⠀
The first thing I wanted to address was my significantly high Zonulin levels before doing any bacteria work and repopulate. ⠀
⠀
The reference range for Zonulin is ⠀
(L) 0.0 < > 107 (H) ng/g ⠀
⠀
...Mine was very high at 133.
⠀
Zonulin is a protein that modulates intestinal barrier function. Zonulin release facilitates the opening of tight junctions between the cells of the intestinal lining to allow for passage of nutrients and fluids into the body. However, Zonulin release can be "overstimulated" by certain factors causing excessive opening of tight junctions, leading to intestinal hyperpermeability or "leaky gut", inflammation, liver overload, nutrient deficiencies, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune conditions. ⠀
⠀
Possible causes of elevated Zonulin: ⠀
Gut microorganism imbalance or the presence of dietary Gluten/gliadin. ⠀
⠀
I myself don’t eat a lot of grains or gluten in direct dietary sources like breads, pastries, pastas ect although gluten is in many things and I don’t actively restrict it.⠀
⠀
I believe the driving factor for me would be dysbiosis. (I will explain more about these findings in my following posts). ⠀
⠀
Treatment:⠀
⠀
Firstly, repair the gut before before proceeding with other protocols; nutrients and other supplements can be damaging to the system if they get out of the gut. Eliminate gluten, sugar, processed food, artificial flavorings, colors, trans fats (among other dietary and lifestyle factors). ⠀
⠀
* It's important to note I would be choosing different brands, supplements, herbs and dietary measures for each individual. ⠀
⠀
My top 5 Supplements (GUT HEALING)- 4 weeks ⠀
⠀
👉🏻 Designs for Health collagen peptides - Collagen contains the amino acids glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline that are needed to repair and rebuild your gutlining. Regular consumption of collagen containing foods like bone broth, gelatin, and collagen powders can be therapeutic additions to the diet that may help mend and prevent leaky gut.
👉🏻 Metagenics Glutagenics - Glutamine and zinc may assist with the repair of gastrointestinal lining while supporting gut integrity and digestion. Glutamine is considered one of the most important supplements for healing of intestinal hyper permeability AKA "leaky gut" because it is the preferred fuel for enterocytes and colonocytes.
👉🏻 Metagenics probiotic (specific to my results) - We all have a different diversity of good bacteria in our guts, I had some specifics that needed some topping up.
👉🏻 Medlab SB 5B - A beneficial probiotic yeast that helps to maintain gastrointestinal function and integrity by supporting a healthy gut microbial profile. Increases the production of secretory IgA (sIgA), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and helping to promote the activity of brush border disaccharide enzymes.
👉🏻 Digestive Enzymes - Many underlying health issues can contribute to enzyme deficiency. Leaky gut is one of the most common culprits because it destroys the brush border of your small intestines. Inflammation from food sensitivities and toxins also decreases enzyme production, as well as chronic stress, genetics, and ageing.
