Hair Loss and Thinning Hair

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

A common symptom I see in clinic and a question I often get asked about in the dispensary a lot is “What do you recommend for hair loss?”⠀

The number one differentiating factor to how I would go about this is, the main cause of the hair loss.. ⠀

Not to mention there is typically more than one contributing factor.

I generally ask the following questions: ⠀

1. How long has this been going on? ⠀

2. Has your hair been falling out in a particular pattern such as thinning at the front, balding in patches, more hair on the shower floor?⠀

3. Have you had your iron levels checked recently? ⠀

4. Are there extra stressors in your life at the moment? ⠀

5. Have you changed your diet? ⠀

6. Have you recently started / changed medications? ⠀

7. Are you experiencing any hormonal changes / correlating symptoms? ⠀

Depending on the answer to these questions I will give different herbs, nutrients or recommendations. ⠀

Some general herbs and nutrients include:

1) Ginkgo Biloba extract has been shown to increase and maintain peripheral micro capillary circulation, ultimately improving or maintaining hair growth.

2) Panax Ginseng is another one of my favourites as it possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, both of which are important for healthy hair follicles. Several studies have also found it to be helpful in promoting hair growth as it stimulates cell proliferation.

3) Astragalus is known for its adaptogen properties. It detoxifies the body, supports T-cell functions and helps support the immune system.

4) Silica doesn't promote hair growth, but it does strengthen hair and prevent thinning.

5) Bioavailable iron supplementation or improving gut health for optimal absorption of nutrients
