Do You Crave Sugar Often?

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

1. If you crave sugar regularly, then one dietary culprit could be insufficient protein intake. Because protein and fats slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, when you don’t consume enough of them your blood sugar can rise and fall at an abnormal rate. The result? Your body craves quick energy from sugar. Try to ensure you’re getting adequate amounts of protein in your diet, especially at breakfast time to avoid this happening. ⠀

2. You are not including a diversity of foods and nutrients in your diet. A diverse intake of colourful vegetables and fruits increases your nutrient intake which can mean less cravings overall. ⠀

3. Your gut microbiome may be trying to tell you that’s something isn’t right. There is a large variety of different kinds of bacteria in our gut, some like to feed off carbohydrates and sugars, whilst others prefer fats. The gut and the brain are connected via the vagus nerve, bacteria utilise this vagus nerve as a communication pathway by producing toxins that promote feelings of ill health such as low energy, fatigue, brain fog and low mood. In this instance, these symptoms are improved by eating sugar, which then halts the production of toxins by the bacteria. Bacteria also influence neurotransmitter synthesis. Low GABA levels can translate to sugar cravings. Certain bacteria can help produce GABA so a low concentration of these bacteria means lower levels of GABA and increase in sugar cravings.⠀
