August 1st-7th World Breastfeeding Week

Many mothers worry about their milk supply, especially in the early stages of breastfeeding. In fact, women who have stopped breastfeeding pre-maturely will more commonly say it was because they were not producing enough milk.


Here are some of my top favourite tips to enhance breast milk production


1) Brewer's yeast is believed to be a galactogogue, used by mothers to help increase breastmilk supply. Brewer's yeast is often recommended as a nutritional supplement during breastfeeding. It can be taken to help increase your supply of breastmilk, but it is also used to combat fatigue as it includes B vitamins such as B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), and H or B7 (biotin). These vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which provide the body with energy


2) Both fenugreek and blessed thistle are also classed as galactagogues, which are any substances that increase milk supply. Fenugreek is typically sold in capsule or powder form, though sometimes you may find seeds and you can brew these as a tea. The benefits of the tea is that you’re also increasing your overall liquid consumption which is also beneficial for enhancing lactation.


3) Reduce your stress levels; high stress levels can deplete your body of essential nutrients which in turn can effect the way rate that you body produces milk. It its utmost importance as new mothers that you're taking "you time" this can be as simple as implementing deep breathing strategies as you fall asleep.


4) Oatmeal for breakfast; Oatmeal has iron in it which also is a must for breastfeeding mothers and helps promote milk supply. Oats hot, rich, and soothing effects while eating it can also help lower stress levels and calm your mind.


5) Include Asparagus in your diet; Asparagus contains phytoestrogens and has the added bonus of tryptophan, an essential amino acid that may stimulate milk supply through the production of prolactin.
