When it comes to treating allergies, prescription and over-the-counter antihistamines can be a quick and easy fix BUT they can also have multiple side effects, including drowsiness and if used over longer periods of time can have a drying effect inside the body and cause reduced vaginal lubrication and nobody wants that!
It is for this reason, many people are opting for natural antihistamines. Here are some of my favourite ways to support my patients through seasonal allergies this year…
1. Vitamin C - boosts the immune system. It also acts as a natural antihistamine. According to a 2018 study on vitamin C in the treatment of allergies, oxidative stress plays a key role in allergic diseases. As vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it may act as a treatment for allergies.
2. Bromelain - A digestive enzyme found in Pineapple, Bromelain is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits and helps with everything from arthritis to sinus pressure. Studies show this enzyme can improve asthma symptoms plus reduce overall allergy sensitivity by stopping the development of inflammatory responses however, keep in mind that pineapple itself has a high level of histamine, so it should be avoided in patients with histamine issues. For this reason Bromelain is best taken as a supplement to avoid the histamine from the pineapple.
3. Stinging Nettle - Stinging nettle leaf may be useful in reducing the symptoms of hay fever by acting as an anti-inflammatory. Some research has linked treatment with stinging nettle leaf to relief of symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
4. Avoiding high histamine foods such as alcohol and other fermented beverages, fermented foods and dairy products, such as yogurt and sauerkraut, dried fruits, avocados, eggplant, spinach, processed or smoked meats, shellfish.
5. Some probiotics have been shown to assist with allergies however its important to select the right one as Certain types of bacteria can produce histamine, whereas some may have the ability to reduce histamine. Lactobacillus GG and L. gasseri are believed to be two of the best probiotics for allergies.
